Last among the 27 state school systems in 2009, Piauí's high school system now has the second-highest score in the country on the Ideb, tied with Goiás and Espírito Santo and behind only Paraná. Under Governor Rafael Fonteles (PT-PI), in office since 2023, it rose from 6th to 2nd.
Deaths at the hands of on-duty military police nearly doubled between 2023 and 2025 (+88%): 813 people killed by police in 2024, 835 in 2025 and 480 from January to August 2026 alone. So far, no police officer has been found convicted for those deaths; in the Baixada Santista, 17 of 23 investigations were shelved.
