About the Abestadão
The Abestadão is an independent Brazilian newspaper. It covers economics, politics, the country and the world as seen from Brazil. The name comes from the house donkey, the Abestadão (roughly "the dimwit" in Portuguese), and the motto says the rest: politics without half-truths. Every factual claim comes with an open source, a date and what that source actually supports.
We have a recurring target: the habit of presenting the interests of financial speculators as if they were everyone's. The counterpoint is the Brazil that works, produces, does research and improves people's lives, shown with figures, periods and sources.
Where we stand
We take sides and do not pretend to be neutral. That does not exempt us from the facts, and we do not automatically defend any government. Progress and problems must be demonstrable.
We do not treat every investor as a speculator. Whoever finances machines, construction and research does something different from whoever bets on a price swing.
Independence
The Abestadão does not belong to any media group, party or advertiser. Every published figure has its open source next to it, and every real quote links to the original.
How to read us
Every story carries a format label. Analysis, Explainer and Reporting are factual and list their sources. The donkey in our logo is our own drawing. See our methodology.
Artificial intelligence
We use AI to help with story ideas, drafts, review and illustration. Content involving real people, quotes or data is only published after a recorded human review. The cartoons on this site are AI-generated illustrations made under editorial direction and labeled as illustrations.
This edition
The English edition translates and adapts stories written in Portuguese. The joke gets adapted, the data does not: figures, dates and sources are those of the original, which remains the reference version. Every story links to the Portuguese original.
